From the Chief Editor’s Desk

Greetings!
I deem it a great honor and take great pride to helm ‘Demography India’ – the flagship journal of the Indian Association of Study of Population - as its Chief Editor. Of particular interest to me is the fact that the time of my assuming this office has happened during this land mark year when our country has completed 75 glorious years of Independence is celebrating Azad Ka Amrit Mahotsav. At this juncture, I wish to recollect how the wealth of data available in different formats in the country and the appropriate use of the same has been instrumental in informing the programs and the policies in the country. I think this is an opportune time to reflect on the advancements and contributions made by our scientific community and take pride in the difference that we have made in analytical thinking and the scientific landscape of our nation.

As Donald J. Bougue says, “Demography is a statistical and mathematical study of the size, composition, spatial distribution of human population, and of changes over time in these aspects through the operation of the five processes of fertility, mortality, marriage, migration and social mobility”. Rightly so, Demography India journal has been providing an inimitable platform for all to disseminate and share high-quality knowledge generated through analysis of data and statistical modeling, methodological advancements, discuss contemporary issues related to demography and its cross-cutting areas including health, economics, environment and overall development of our nation. Additionally, it has also been providing some invaluable insights to young researchers for undertaking new areas of exploration and research.

Over all these years, rigorous peer review, constructive feedback, and leadership of the past Chief-Editors, have helped in accelerating the quality of the journal. No wonder, today, it stands as one of the most sought-after journals in social sciences. I hope to take the baton forward and strive further to enhance the journal’s metrics, reduce the turnaround time of articles in terms of their peer review, minimizing the median time and time between acceptance and publication. I have an excellent and experienced editorial team to rely on and I am sure our concerted efforts, the journal will emerge as an avenue for publishing world-class research from diverse subject areas with very high intellectual standards in the field of demography so as to be ever relevant to academics, policy, and regulation. I sincerely wish and wish all our readers an intellectually stimulating read.
